We are Launching the BarCamp Yerevan Soon!

The philosophy of BarCamp is the following: all presentations are given by participants themselves and without the formality of traditional conference. The schedule of events is “produced” by the participants of the conference and is formed only after the conference opens, as participants add the presentations they want to hold on a white board.

What’s a BarCamp

Date: May 14, 2012

BarCamp Yerevan

“BarCamp Yerevan” was first held on April 17-19, 2009. Armenian IT and new media specialists fell in love with the new type of “unconference” and each successive BarCamp, in 2010, 2011, attracted more and more people. In 2009 we only had 400 participants. Last year, in 2011, the number of developers, hackers, geeks, bloggers, journalists and online activists exceeded 800. Check out this video to get a glimpse of what it felt to be in “BarCamp Yerevan 2011″. Our favorite bit is the afterparty of course ;)

“BarCamp Yerevan 2012″ will be held pretty soon. We strongly urge you to register in order to take part in the event.

What is the BarCamp?
BarCamp is a brand new event, originating in the Silicon Valley of USA in 2005 that has become widespread throughout the world.

Filling in presentation wall
BarCamp is usually a “non-conference” in the sphere of information technology or “IT,” new media and Internet. A “non-conference” is the unofficial, informal part of the conference supporting open discussions and a free exchange of ideas and opinions.

First BarCamp in History
The philosophy of BarCamp is the following: all presentations are given by participants themselves, with no formally invited guest speakers and without the formality of traditional conference. Most revealing, the schedule of events is “produced” by the participants of the conference and is formed only after the conference opens, as participants add the presentations they want to hold on a white board.

Our region
The first ever BarCamp in the former Soviet Union was organized in Kyiv in October 2007. It brought together about 300 people from Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, and other countries from the region and featured around 45 presentations.

After BarCamp Kiev, there was “BarCamp Baltics” in Riga (February 2008) and “Barcamp Caucasus” in Tbilisi (June 2008). The wave of BarCamps continues.

Target Group
The main target audience of the BarCamp is Web project managers, entrepreneurs, new media activists, designers, educators and all business professionals who are building the next generation Web.

Preliminary schedule

Date: June 1, 2011

So, we’re meeting on Saturday, at 9:00 at AUA and starting to fill in our presentations titles on the whiteboard schedule. If you’re not going to do a presentation (shame on you), you may come at 10:00, when the official opening will take place.
The presentations will start at 11:00 till 18:00. Parallel to the presentations, we’ll have several workshops, Linux Install Fest and a small job fair in a separate room.

Later in the evening, most likely some people will form a group to go and watch the Armenia-Russia football match altogether. Regardless of the match outcome we’ll promise not to drink too much because… on Sunday we’re coming at 10:00 sharp again. Some very interesting presentations by our guests are expected. We’ll organize some closing ceremony at 17:00 and start cleaning up the space. We’ll start preparing for our great afterparty that’s scheduled at 19:00, the location will be announced soon. And, be sure, you won’t wanna miss it ;)

By the way, if you are preparing a presentation and would like to show it to us, receive some feedback and advises, you’re welcome to join us at the Friends Bar on Friday 20:00, where we’ll be gathering together with organizers, volunteers, guests and start preparing for our busy weekend.

Here’s the preliminary schedule.

Workshop by Charles McCathieNevile (aka ‘chaals’) of Opera Software and W3C

Date: May 26, 2011

During a workshop at the BarCamp Yerevan 2011 Charles McCathieNevile of Opera Software and W3C will tell us how to create Web applications using open web standards. We will also learn what to consider when creating cross-platform applications that work equally well on desktops, tablet PCs, phones, TVs and other devices with Internet access. Such applications are not based on proprietary software, but on open standards like HTML5, W3C Widgets, WAC, SVG.

Participation in the seminar is free, but it will be most useful for those who are at least familiar with HTML and JavaScript. We also recommend that you come with laptops to have an opportunity to practice coding. Source code of all examples, demonstrated at the Barcamp Yerevan, 2011, will be available for everyone after the event.

Apart from the workshop, chaals will also speak on “The magic of modern web standards” – about the usage of open platforms and tools like HTML, CSS and Java to create complex content, for which some “heavy” graphics and Flash are still widely used. The presentation will be accompanied by a large number of illustrative examples.

The Rules of BarCamp

Date: May 1, 2011

1st Rule: You do talk about BarCamp.

2nd Rule: You do blog about BarCamp

3rd Rule: If you want to present, you must write your topic and name in a presentation slot.

4th Rule: Only three word intros.

5th Rule: As many presentations at a time as facilities allow for.

6th Rule: No pre-scheduled presentations, no tourists.

7th Rule: Presentations will go on as long as they have to or until they run into another presentation slot.

8th Rule: If this is your first time at BarCamp, you HAVE to present. (Ok, you don’t really HAVE to, but try to find someone to present with, or at least ask questions and be an interactive participant.)

Those are rules inspired by the “Fight Club”, of course.. but don’t take them too much seriously :)

BarCamp 2010 Registration

Date: June 1, 2010

Want to take part in the geekiest event in Yerevan of this year? You simply need to register on the website.

Why register?

First of all, registration helps the organizers know the approximate number of participants and better organize the venue and resources.

Besides, the registered participants will have the opportunity to make presentations. All the presenters will get an awesome  BarCamp Yerevan 2010 T-shirt and some BarCamp merchandise (very limited quantity!).

How to register?

Go to http://barcamp.am/wp-login.php?action=register and fill in ALL the fields in the form, not forgetting to check the checkbox BarCamp EVN ’10.

Important note! If you have taken part in the BarCamp 2009, you DON’T need to re-register. Simply update your profile by logging in to the website and checking the BarCamp EVN ’10 checkbox (see above).

Forgot your password?

You can search in your email for it (it’s being automatically sent to the email address upon registration).
If you can’t find it, follow this link and request a new password.

If you have questions regarding the registration and profile updating, feel free to ask them.

Want to make a presentation?

Don’t miss the registration at the venue and fill in your presentation name in the schedule. Some important points to note:

Dear BarCampers,

Thank you for your active participation and interesting discussions. We especially appreciated the work of the volunteers, who helped the BarCamp initiative team throughout the event. Once again – thanks to all those individuals and organizations, who helped and supported us in the preparatory phase.

Our special ‘thank you’ goes to the funders: Open Society Institute, OSCE, iCON and Web.am, our partners “Internews” and Media Diversity Institute.

For making us feel home, for the great atmosphere and excellent cookies, compliments to the American University of Armenia.

Here’s also a reminder to all the participants to send their presentations to the barista@barcamp.am email address. Also, make sure to leave (hyper)links to all your blog-posts, photos and videos in the comments section to this post. Yeah, and don’t forget – the official BarCamp Yerevan 2009 tag is: barcampevn09.

The (un)conference is over, but this website will continue to be updated with photos, videos, presentation files and other relevant information, so make sure to check back again soon.

It was an immense pleasure to spend the BarCamp days with you all.

Let’s remind the basics

Date: April 10, 2009

Let’s once again remind you, what to expect at BarCamp Yerevan.

First of all, your presentations, on IT in general, Web, New Media and other topics connected to those fields.
We’ll have two types of presentations with 30 and 10 minutes duration. Participants choose themselves which format suits their presentations best. As we’ll have international participants, preferred languages of presentations are English and Russian. Keep in mind that presentations have to be interactive, so dedicate 20-25% of your time for questions and small discussions.

Please make sure your presentations fit in dedicated time. We’ll have 3 parallel, synchronized threads of presentations, so even difference of 2 minutes can spoil the rest of event.

Once again, advertisement, political and religious agitation, and any other abuse of BarCamp’s openness is strongly discouraged.

Each participant chooses which presentation he/she attends, it’s also quite OK on BarCamps to leave for another presentation in the middle of slot – so called “vote with your feet” principle

Beside presentations, we’ll also have 2 other formats – BridgeCamp and Poster session.
We’re waiting for some more news, and will immediately share them with you, so don’t forget to check this website, or subscribe to RSS feed.

Pre-camp for young Dotcom bloggers

Date: March 16, 2009

On March 13 Reporter_arm and Observer organized a pre-camp for the 25 young bloggersof the Project Harmony International‘s Dotcom project.

Barcamp Yerevan was presented at the start of the meeting and the Dotcom bloggers showed genuine interest in taking part in the event which they were kindly invited to and promised to register on Barcamp Yerevan website as soon as possible. I guess we will have to wait and see.

After the initial pleasantries and Barcamp Yerevan introduction, Observer and Reporter_arm made several presentations: “Making successful presentations”, “How to write” and “Blogging”, which were welcomed by pre-campers and met with questions and comments throughout.

Hello Aram! 1. Well, if you mean schedule - No, that's what Barcamp about, it's absolutely user-generated, so final schedule will be created only after opening, when all presenting participants will list their presentations. If you mean just general plan, in few words a draft looks like: Friday evening starting 16-17 o'clock: Registration of participants, knowing-each other, socializng may be a small opening party, somewhere outside. Saturday morning from 9:00 registration (for those who didn't come on Friday), ~10:30 Opening ceremony, 11:00-~18:00: presentations, presentations and presentations!. Sunday: 10:00-17:00 presentations, 17:00 closing ceremony, and farewell party in the evening. Of course some coffee-breaks during main days (Sat/Sun). There will be also a common place other then presentation halls, where participants can socialize, talk, discuss, share ideas, etc.. Again it's far from being final yet, but you can get general idea. 2. Not yet, but we're going to add it till the end of next week. If you have questions you'd like not ask in comments, you can mail me, see p. 3. 3. Well you don't have to propose it to anyone. You'll just come on April 18 morning, and add it to the board of presentations. If you want just ask for advice, to see if it's good idea for presentation, gmail me to xelgen.am :) 4. Nope, there are no obligations. You're free to attend when you can, what you're interested in. Especially Friday is optional. Still of course it will be nice if majority will participate to whole event. 5. Projectors, screens will be provided by AUA. They have pretty good equipped halls and classes. Network equipment will be provided by sponsors, we're in negotiation process. One thing we'll surely need are power cords/adapters for numerous laptops, expected. 6. About Innovation Incubator, we're not yet sure if it will take place. In few words it's a chance for those who have ideas for startups to present their ideas and plans, and find interested professionals and potential venture investors/donors. The main problem with Innovation Incubator is lack of donors/investors, due to known financial situation. Thank you for bug reports, I really appreciate it. Now I'm sure you're inborn QA specialist :) So, about point 1, you're right it's due to WP's (and plugin used for custom fields) limitations. We'll add a list of participants to the website soon, and everything will look properly there. I'll also take a look to see if we can fix it in user's profile, so we don't confuse our participants. About point 2, you really saved us from a problems! While data was being written correctly to DB and we avoided big mess, there was problem with several characters braking dropdown element, so if someone edited his details later, and didn't set that value again, it would be dropped to default - "Full name". Now everything seems to work. Thanks again.
posted by AramK on March 1, 2009
Hi guys! Thanks for great initiative. I've got some questions that would like to clarify. 1. Is there any draft agenda for BarCamp? 2. Is there a list of organizing group's members? 3. To whom should I propose the topic of mt presentation? 4. Is it obligatory to attend all 3 days of BarCamp all day long? 5. Will the necessary equipments (overhead, laptop, etc.) provided by AUA/organizers, or we have to care about that things by ourselves? 6. What is the "Innovation Incubator" event? I checked that option during the registration anyway, but would like to have more information on it. Some feedback about the registration form. 1. Checking my profile I found that my ICQ number is placed in the "AIM" field and Skype account name in "Yahoo AIM field". Is it due to WordPress limitations? Guess this will cause a confusion in future. 2. I selected the "Full name Nickname and Company name" option to be printed in my T-shirt on the registration form, but later found that is was replaced by "Full Name" option after login. I've tried to correct this by choosing my first option and saving, but there was the "Full Name" again on the next login. Can someone check this, please?
